The Thistle & Shamrock Dance Academy is a Celtic Dance studio focused primarily on Scottish Highland Dancing for children and adults from the Central Virginia Region. The students study and present the traditional dance of the Highlands as promoted by the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing. The studio also develops and presents original, unique pieces that include movements from the other Celtic nations. Dancers perform at festivals and events throughout Virginia, and compete individually all over the US, Canada and UK.
Some of the dances that you might see at a performance include The Barracks Johnnie, The Sword Dance, Flora MacDonald’s Fancy, Broadswords and a massed Fling. Watch the graceful but strong movements as dancers tell stories of the warrior preparing for battle, the stag cavorting along the hillsides of the Highlands, the ladies demonstrating their poise and skill. Enjoy character dances depicting tales of their Irish brothers and sisters and the men who sailed the seas.
All of the students are instructed by Bridget Glasheen Boswell, an accredited teacher of the British Association of Teachers of Dance (BATD) in Glasgow, Scotland and a member of the Federation of United States Teachers and Adjudicators of Highland Dance (FUSTA). |
